I think Mr. Chen reported such a high number because he had to backtrack his route several times due to visa issues and trouble entering countries with civil strife. He also couriered items which would take him off the most direct route. He was stuck in the floods in Thailand, and had to circumnavigate mountain ranges. All of this could lead to a journey longer than the circumference of our planet.
