“The Montague Paratrooper Highline folding mountain bike has been designed to be a real cross-country beast of a bike.

As with all of the folding mountain bikes produced by Montague, you can expect the Paratrooper Highline to easily fold down in under 20 seconds, fit on the back of a car, on a train or a bus all folded down too.

Montague, as with all of their bike models, have made absolutely no compromises and it really does exceed all expectations – I didn’t even think that this was possible.”

Folding Bike Guy

Plane & Pilot Magazine reviewed the Paratrooper Highline as the perfect bike for general aviation pilots.

“Pilots looking to stay mobile after flying into the backcountry or on a weekend mountain getaway can carry the lightweight Montague Paratrooper Highline. The rugged mountain bike weighs about 30 pounds and folds down in only 20 seconds to a 36x28x12-inch size, making it easy to stow.

It’s built for rough terrain, with a 2×10 drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes and fat 27.5-inch tires that provide superior rolling ability over obstacles.”

Plane & Pilot

“Few bicycle companies need to measure the size of an aircraft door when designing a new model. But Montague Corp., based in Cambridge, Mass., did exactly that when the Pentagon said it needed a lightweight, foldable bike that special-operations forces could carry as they jumped out of airplanes into enemy territory.

US forces found the bikes ideal for moving quietly and without using scarce fuel. Word spread throughout the world’s tightly knit military community.”

  1. Gordon

I’ve had the Highline now for about 6 months, and been meaning to review it for a while. I love this bike! I ride mostly off road, woods, fire trails, and it handles anything I throw at it. Not my first Montague, and probably won’t be my last.

  2. Enhamed

I owned an older Montague with 26″ wheels before buying the Highline and this bike is a lot more capable in the woods. The wheel/tire combo is great over rocks and roots. I had never owned a bike with a rockshox fork before either and I’m impressed.

  3. Chris Z

I really like the bike but I would recommend installing wider handlebars if you’re doing technical off-raod riding. They feel a little narrower compared to other other mountain bikes. With that small change it handles just like my buddy’s Specialized hardtail. I keep mine in the car trunk so I can sneak in a ride whenever.

  4. Chris G

I have lots of bikes and added the Highline to my collection a few months ago so I could take it with me on trips. It holds its own against my Specialized Camber with 650b wheels although it has a different feel with the hard tail, it takes all the punishment I give it, and I find it to be a little more stable (more relaxed steering angle?). Overall a great bike that I tend to ride a lot because it fits and folds into the car. Definitely happy with my purchase so far.

  5. JCK

After a little research I took a chance on this bike without riding first. I honestly didn’t expect it to be as nice as it is. I ride a high-end mountain bike on a regular basis, so I expected the Paratrooper to be a little lacking for me, but I really like this bike. For travel, this thing is perfect. The fold down is fast and easy. I’ve been on/off road and banged this thing around a bit and it holds up just fine. It is a little stiff on the back end, but nothing too bad. I have the 20” model. I’m 6’1” and around 212lbs. The seat will go higher than I can ride and it doesn’t feel like a toy under me- very solid. Its hard to believe it’s a folding bike.

  6. Bryan R

I looked at the Highline because I wanted a really good mountain bike but I don’t have the space to store it. I bought it because of the company reputation for solid engineering and construction. I love it because it is a blast to ride.

  7. Paul Rivera

The Montague Paratrooper Highline is a sweet good looking bike been riding it since I got it really like it alot. The beefy 27.5 Tires looks Great just right on the frame, pretty Quick for it’s weight rides nice for a bike this size that can fold as well to me is sweet the seat on it well I’m 220 and the seat is pretty comfy 5 star upgrading the fork suspension

  8. Drew McGee

I’ve had the bike for 5 months and I’ve enjoyed it, especially folding it up and tucking it into the back of my Xterra on top of all my other gear. The pedals were upgraded (in the missing pedal fiasco) to a more aggressive BMX flat style, but I can’t say if they’re better or not as they’re all I know on this bike. After my first 3-mile trail ride, I upgraded the handle bars with an extendable, adjustable riser to keep me from hunching over. This upgrade takes a lot of pressure off your hands and makes you feel more in control. After a few hours of riding in a mountain bike park in Vermont, I bought a Diamondback suspension seat post that acts like a mild rear suspension – my back and butt thank me over every rock and root. The bike has handled a good number of streets, gravel roads, mountain climbs, and descents, but nothing insane as I’m not that confident of a rider.

All in all, it’s a solid mountain bike that can take some abuse, draws attention/is a talking point, and packs away nicely. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys mild to difficult mountain bike trails, but I can’t speak for those who need something for expert level downhill racing, etc. Have fun out there and stay safe!

  9. STM

I was intrigued by the idea of a full-size folding mountain bike and the convenience of being able to store a bike in my SUV. Really liked the look of the frame with the wide top tube and the military ties to the development of this bike. Those reasons are good for buying the bike but it is the riding of the bike that makes me recommend it. It is a super bike-meets any of the challenges I try. I’m very happy with it and would buy again.

  10. Max N.

This bike is a prime choice for mountain biking and probably the only folder that can do it. I’ve taken it on some pretty rough trails and overall been pretty pleased. The aluminum frame can feel a little “harsh” sometimes compared to carbon bikes I’ve ridden that seem absorb more bumps but with the tires at the right psi and suspension dialed in it’s great for a hardtail.

  11. Max

I’ve only owned for two weeks, but I already know it’s awesome. It is so convenient to be able to take my bike wherever I want and know that it is safe in my car. It rides equal to any mountain bike and better than my old one due to the 27.5 inch wheels. I made some upgrades that will help a lot in comfort. First I added an adjustable stem because I’m 45 years old and no longer with a 20 year old body. Next I changed the grips which included bar ends for climbing. I am also considering a new seat.
I highly recommend this bike and know that the 27.5 inch tire really is superior to the 26 inch version.

  12. Chuck

6 months in, and completely satisfied with the bike. Purchased the rear rack, shorter stem and installed a dropper post, after a couple months riding, and that’s the last upgrade needed. As for riding, it does everything I’ve put it through. Sometimes I just point it and hang on: rocks, drops, mud, berm turns and deep ravines. Balance and response is very good on all kinds of terrain. Once the ride is over, fold it and put in the back seat until next time. Highly recommend.

  13. Alain

Today i am very sad I broke the front schock of my paratrooper that I had for yeeeears. So I am looking at the Highline model. Looking at the Highline is starting to make me smile again. My broken one has just completed the highest and most incredible mountain passes you can imagine. Now I am in France and will test in the Pyrenees.

  14. Eugene

I had purchase the Matte Black version with the Rack from another website; I had this MTB for 2 1/2 years and loved it; later I sold to a friend of mines because I want to purchase the Matte Grey with the Rack this time. Definitely this Dec ’21 I will purchase Montague Paratrooper Highliner Matter Grey.

  15. Nick

My Highline saved my life in a car accident! I attribute that to the quality of the build. All Hail the Highline!!??

  16. Wane Dompier

I purchased the Paratrooper Highline in October 2020 (during the start of the Pandemic). Until last week, the bike had mainly seen light use on mostly flat and gentle grades of various gravel, sand, and hard scapes for longer distances, and not really any downhill or single track trails. My Son-In-Law was skeptical that the bike would make it on the MTB downhill trails in California but….. this last weekend, I decided to see how well the bike would perform (and hold up) under real MTB conditions taking a Moderate Trail in California that was not highly technical but quick and winding with a few drops, gravel, and lots of sand. The bike was in stock condition, clean, lubricated, and adjusted. It performed extremely well with excellent steering, balance, shifting, and brakes — I never lost the chain once, which I have seen on less capable bikes. I now have the bike home, and except for cleaning and a few adjustments (normal for any MTB ride), it should be good to go. Whoever designed it bike did a great job. I would recommend it to anyone needing to cut down on the space required to transport a mountain bike (my motivation). I only wish it had a dropper post, which will probably be the next upgrade I will do. Options for a slightly wider seat would be nice as well.
